Planning Inspector - Inspector Grades, Salaries and Pension ArrangementsSalary scales from 1 August 2007There are three grades of Planning Inspector: Housing and Planning Inspector (HPI), Senior Housing and Planning Inspector (SHPI) and Principal Housing and Planning Inspector (PHPI). Progression up the salary ranges of each grade depends principally on competence, as assessed by line managers. Promotion from HPI to SHPI depends purely on competence: the number of SHPI posts is not limited and there is no element of competition. Planning Inspectors at all grades may be able to earn extra money by undertaking additional productivity. There are two other grades of Inspector: Access Inspector and Rights of Way Inspector. Progression up the salary range for both grades depends principally on competence as assessed by line managers. PensionsThe normal age of retirement is 65. Salaried Inspectors are eligible to join the Civil Service’s premium pension scheme. The scheme is an occupational final salary scheme and provides a pension of 1/60th of the final salary per year of service. You may opt to open a partnership pension account instead. It is possible to transfer pension benefits into the premium pension scheme from most other schemes and to purchase added years. However, potential new recruits should carefully evaluate their transfer options before joining HOUSING AND PLANNING INSPECTOR
