ARE YOU A PLANNING PROFESSIONAL?
DO YOU ENJOY WORKING INDEPENDENTLY?
If so, have you considered working on a consulting basis for the Planning Inspectorate to decide Planning Appeals?
Our mission is to use our impartial expertise in planning and land use to help shape well-planned environments and deliver sustainable development.
One of our key functions is to decide planning appeals, usually under Section 78 the Town & Country Planning Act 1990. This work is delivered using our salaried workforce and non-salaried Inspectors (NSIs) who are contracted on a case by case basis.
We are seeking the services of a number of additional Non-salaried Inspectors.
Qualifications & Experience:
You must have a professional qualification related to planning, and be a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute. You are likely to have worked in your chosen field for a number of years and have significant experience at a senior level. You also need to have excellent interpersonal skills.
We offer a comprehensive briefing on the Inspectorate’s ways of working prior to your conducting casework for us.
Availability:
You must be available during January 2009 for briefing and for a substantial period until April 2009 to gain maximum benefit from that briefing.
The role offers:
- Working on a flexible, fee-paid, case-by-case basis;
- Fees from £238 per case, rising to £280 per case when you have demonstrated the ability to consistently produce the required standard of casework, (an experienced NSI can undertake up to 9 cases per fortnight); and
- Working from home with the opportunity of travel within England and/or Wales;

Welcome by the Chief Executive
Thank you for your interest in the Planning Inspectorate. You will be wondering whether to take your interest any further and in particular whether the non-salaried Inspector role would provide a fulfilling, rewarding experience. Naturally I want to persuade you that it would.
To work with the Planning Inspectorate is to be a decision maker of the utmost importance. You would be using your impartial expertise in planning and land use to help shape well-planned environments – that is our mission in life. And you would be doing so following a clear set of values which have openness and fairness at their core.
We are looking for people with energy, commitment and professional expertise. I hope you will read on and that you will consider making an application for registration as a non-salaried Inspector at this critical time of planning reform.
With best wishes,
Katrine Sporle
Chief Executive
